Shoulder Arthroscopy
Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimal invasive operative technique employed for the diagnosis and management of several joint related disorders concerning the shoulder. As a part of the surgery the arthroscope – a small camera with a light on the end is inserted into the shoulder with small cuts in the skin. It gives a clear picture of the internal framework of the shoulder mainly composed of muscles, blood vessels, tendons and cartilages. Looking at these recorded images, the surgeon can perform required work, for example, he can remove or suture the injured tissues, level the bone edges or treat rotator cuff injuries. There is usually less pain, lesser scar, and shorter hospital stay after shoulder arthroscopy than in the conventional open surgery. It is more frequently described in usage for conditions such as impingement syndrome and rotator cuff tear, shoulder instability and arthritis, among others.

Who needs Shoulder Arthroscopy?
- Persistent Shoulder Pain : Patients who have constant shoulder pain which cannot be managed by medication, physical therapy or by avoiding certain types of movements will require shoulder arthroscopy for diagnosis and treatment.
- Shoulder Instability : Patients with recurrent dislocations of the shoulder or an impression of instability of the joint because of the damage to the ligaments may require arthroscopy of the shoulder.
- Rotator Cuff Tears : Patients with rotator cuff tear are partial or complete; this causes patients to experience weakness coupled by limited shoulder movement and are likely to undergo arthroscopy to reassemble the torn tendons.
- Impingement Syndrome : Some patients who may be having shoulder impingement where the rotator cuff tendons are squeezed when the arm is in motion may require arthroscopy to trim off inflamed tissue or bone spurs that cause the impingement.
- Labral Tears : Some patients may have labral tears, and they are commonly seen in patients with shoulder injuries or dislocations; the cartilage might therefore need to be surgically repaired through arthroscopy so as to enhance the shoulder’s stability and functionality.
